Coin conversion ( Unknown ) Colonial

This one really has me stumped. It appears to be a NJ Copper ( see shield in pic ). It was holed to attach to something. It has a bevel cut or filed into it. I have found two of these over the years in separate places. What do you think ?

Exactly what I was thinking Benz Looks very old as well. Love the pattern

Think it has to be made from a coin because it seems too crude to have been produced that way. Sure makes for an interesting relic.

Possibly inset into a rifle stock as part of a patchbox latch?
