Coil size question....

I just picked up a Garrett GTP 1350 and it came with 2 coils. The standard is 7 X 10" and it also came with a 10 X 14" DD coil. My question is which one for which job? for instance, if I am going to search an old school yard, and I am only concerned with finding old coins, would I use small or large? I would think using the larger coil would let me cover the ground faster, but I don't know if it will pick up the coins reliably. Any thoughts?

Thank you, I am doing a test in the back yard now. I have owned a smaller coil for an older machine for trashy areas, but this is my first larger than "standard" coil ;D

Ok, been testing. It looks like the larger coil will detect the same small targets the same as the standard one will. Does the larger one handle trash the same as the standard one? Why wouldn't I just use the large one all the time and cover more ground?.... Thanks for any input!

Joe, I believe the smaller coil is better for high trash areas, but you would lose some depth. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. 8)

Ahh ok, here at home where I am testing there isn't any junk. But it would make sence that a larger search matrix has a higher probability of multiple targets being scanned at the same time...

Thank you all for helping a "re-newbie" I haven't detected in about 10 years. I am trying to learn how to fall off the bike again as effeciently as possible ;D
