I just bought a used minelab detector and the good news is it seems to be in fine working order. The bad is that the coil cable has been wrapped around the shaft long enough to have retained a pretty stubborn memory.SSSSSSS like that.

Since I am hip mounting this is a bit of a hassle. I have hung the coil up on a ceiling fan with the first foot of cable draped over the blade to avoid any stress on the connection (yes this does look goofy). Cable seems to be slowly straightening out but I am certainly open to ideas on how to speed up the process. TIA

If you're careful to keep the cable ends dry , you can place the cable
in a tub of hot water and then hang it from the ceiling fan a couple hours , thats an old trick us old appliance service guys use when installing new refrigerator door seals, because they come all mashed and kinked up in a box thats too small .

park car in sun, leave coil and cable (not electronics box) in car till about 2pm so it gets nice and hot. remove coil and cable from car and hang on clothes line or something similar so it stretches out. i've used this technique with audio cables.

This can become a problem and I like Re-tek's idea as heat on the cable can help. I try to hip mount all my water detectors except the ones I use for diving.

I don't think turning on the fan would be a good idea. That was my first thought on reading the question.

I would be extremely careful...you mentioned hanging the coil? I have already had a broken cable in the line...probably not the best of ideas...

Not to worry greg the coil end is not the part hanging. Coil cable seems to be relaxing some. I like the idea of leaving it in the car to heat up some but I believe there are some electronics in this particular coil. Its a 10 inch tornado for a minelab sovereign. I may be wrong on that one though. Believe it or not I don't have a blow dryer either.
