Found at a house built in 1914. When it was dug I almost threw it away. So crusted and rusty looked like a piece of household junk. Curiosity got the better of me so took it home and did a little cleaning before deciding it may be something interesting and put it in electrolysis for 6 hours (three 2 hour treatments).
What has me stumped is method of attachment. What would it have gone through and left almost two inches sticking out?
Any ideas on age would be appreciated also.
Thanks for looking!!

I think an old iron stove hook or iron fire place type hook, to hang brass pokers etc..

That would also explain no need to cut off the excess fastener as it wasn't visible. The small hole would fit over a small pin so it wouldn't move.

You did a nice job on the electrolysis. Can't believe this was under all the rust.

It appears to me to be a coat hook from an old piece of furniture called a "hall tree."
The hall tree would be placed near the front door. It typically had a seat , a mirror in the center of the back, and hooks on either side of the mirror for coats and scarves.

Either that, or a curtain tie back. One on either side of a window. The mounting would have been done prior to the plastering.

Take your pick as I'm not 100% sure of either...

PS. Very nice job of clean-up!

Thanks for the replies. I was delighted at how well it cleaned up. My wife now wants me to mount in the house she likes it so much!! Just have to figure out where she wants it and how to mount it.
