With the great weather in Va. went out today and found this Union Artillery Officers coat button. Just wondering if clear nail polish or clear coat will protect the brass finish without harming the button DSCI2789.webp

The finish is gold plate over brass (gilt). Please do not put nail polish or anything else on that button. I believe they use a bit of aluminum jelly to clean them up, but that's it.

Congrats on a really nice button!

Thanks I will leave it alone. Found on a farm that was a Confederate camp site in Catlett. Va. Found some other things which I will post later. Thanks

Do not use Naval or aluminum jelly on that button. It is too nice.

I'm with fyrfftr1.
Maybe use a Baby's Tooth Brush at the Most. That's a Nice 'A' Button.
