My grandson found this on the claim and at first glance I thought petrified wood, however next day at home taking time to look at it I wondering if this could be a piece of lignite coal. It has what looks like wood qualities. It does leave black marks on one's hand. Thoughts & opinion appreciated..

Looks to be coal. It has all the attributes of coal.

Thanks Brian....In doing more research this piece more resembles anthracite coal in appearance from the pictures I found online to compare with.

There's a test for pearls. If you put a pearl in vinegar, and it dissolves, it was a real pearl. So see if your rock will burn then you'll know if it was coal.
Funny guy huh.

I have done that and it burns like embers (not a bright flame) and smells like coal. I'm finding a few more outcrops on the claim, attached is a picture of one. From a distance it looks like a log but is covered with flood river sand & silt and when up close and broken apart one can tell it is coal....
