Clump of Rust found in Ocean. SOLVED

I found this ferrous piece in the ocean at low tide with my DetecterPro. I thought it might be a ring, at first. It cleaned up pretty good with electrolysis. About the size of a penney. What is it? I have a few ideas but I thought I would ask y'all.

It looks to me like one of the caps off of a u-joint.

Bingo. I think you got it. That would also account for the groove. I thought it was a broken valve lifter or tiny piston. :P
What would that be doing in the ocean where people swim? Could it have been off a boat?

Yes, It's most likely from a boat. The one in my picture is for a Mercruiser upper gear case. Check out part number 16 below.

Im convinced. SOLVED. Thanks. Inboard broken U-Joint. Modern junk.
This shows that offshore jetsam will eventually work its way onto the beach.. It was found about 10 feet from shore in about knee deep ocean water where people swim.
I also found this unidentified copper piece. Maybe also from a boat?
