Club Hunts~Recovery With Probe~Need Suggestions

I will be attending my first club hunt in April and will have to probe for the coins. I was told that the coins are planted approximately 1-2 inches in the ground, and I was wondering for those that have attended club hunts are you sometimes able to tell where the ground has been cut(visually or by touch) and the coin had been planted?

I don't have a probe yet,so I don't have any experience with one yet and I know the hunts are timed. So I'm trying to figure out anything that might help me recover the targets quickly. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hopefully, I will get a probe next month and get to practice a little in March or beginning of April before the hunt. I'm not feeling very confident about this yet. lol

Most times you can pull up on the grass to find the slit and use a screw driver to scrape it out. Probing straight down for it like you would do else where is time wasting. Most don't even pinpoint, and if it beeps, they reach down an pull grass.

I like to use a knife like a bayonet to insert down into the grass while coin hunting as the blade wedges in pull tabs and rings to be levered out of the ground.

With our club hunts you can't tell where they have cut the sod and pulling will do no good as they only put a slice in the ground . I use one of the newer bullseye probes and that works good if only 2 to 3 inches from target, it will be right on. If you are more than that you will need a different kind of probe. You will enjoy being in a club I know when I first joined the guys were mostly very good about showing me techniques and giving me advice on which equipment would work best for me. Have a great time.

Believe it or not, you might also try a chop stick-available for free at any Chinese restaurant.

I am not clear as to what you need. If you need to locate the coin and you have a conventional TR coil that gives you a cone shaped output you could simply raise the coil to get a smaller area and pinpoint (like with a "sniffer), small electronic pinpointing device, such as a Whites Bullseye . If the probe is a screwdriver like device used to lever the coin out of the ground then you could used a screwdriver in a pinch. I had one I used years ago , just sanded down the tip to a nice rounded point. Take care with the screwdiver as most probes are brass, or another softer material. Good luck with your hunt.

I've been attending club hunts since the late 70's. I have always used a small slotted screwdriver with a 1/4" wide tip about 5-6" long.
Usually the coins are "planted" less than 1" deep.
There is no need to dig large holes. The key is speed and accurate pinpointing.
I used to practice in my yard by tossing about 25 pennies into the grass and then time myself to see how long it takes to recover them all.

I have never been to a planted hunt. It sounds like fun though. I will have to try one. They are usually in sand on beaches around here (MD) "eastern shore".
