hey everyone nice to meet you all, my question is what location would you recommend for gold panning, that is a 3 - 4 hours drive radious from southern NY. (Orange County)
I have tried my luck in a lot of streams around where I live here in NY. But I keep coming up short. I recently vacationed in the Adirondacks a few weeks ago, I brought back some classified material from around whiteface mountain, blue mountain and long lake area. I ran it through my blue bowl back at home, and nothing was there. So any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - Jay

Tuttle Sr. from Orange County Choppers closet?

..........My bad, but ya had to know it was coming:laughing7:

A friend lives in New Jersey (BrianC053 here on tnet) and he goes up to western Mass to pan/sluice. My understanding is the state of NY claims all gold as the property of the state (??). There should be glacial gold somewhere in NY tho...no real history of commercial mining in NY. There were commercial mines in CT and MA and NH so you don't have to drive too far :)

Edit: added Brian's name since he is obviously ok with that :) )

Anyone tried Buffalo Brook VT ? That's 3.5 hours from Orange County NY. Yea not to worried about that old law, Ive read about some placer gold around the finger lakes region. Its frustrating, where I live theres a lot of Iron, Quartz, Mica, Pyrite and no sedimentary rocks. But if it was never dropped here I guess I am chasing nothing :(

(Kevin thanks for the shout-out, assuming I'm your friend in NJ).
Jay, it's true - I live in Northern NJ near Morristown and as Kevin mentioned I've got a new favorite spot this year (discovered by WesternMassGold) up in...western Mass. About. 4 hour drive for me, less for you.

Also, I'm an active member of the Delaware Valley GPAA chapter (www.dvgpaa.com) and we have four "claims" in Eastern Pennsylvania; I say "claims" because they're just four properties where there's water, the owners let us pan & sluice (and even high bank at one of them) and there's a tiny amount of gold - if you work hard enough. If your expectations aren't high, and any color is good color, then you might enjoy our club's meetings. There's one next Saturday 9/12.
PM me if you'd like more info or if you want to talk offline about a road trip; I want to get up to Western Mass one more time before it gets cold!

There is not much around there. I lived in Rock Tavern for many years (just off Bull Rd) and never heard of any really good finds.
Now if it's war / military relics you are after, then almost any area along the Hudson would be good. I worked at Bear Mountain for the Palisades region of the NYS Park system, and I think you can get a permit for metal detecting. I could be wrong on that, or things may have changed in the years I have been gone.

Ive read the Hudson valley highlands has the correct rock makeup type, that gold hangs out with, anyone tried around there ?
