Max appears to have been a 'Merchant' of New York assuming this is him, mentioned under "The Mayor's Relief Fund" in this article
dated Sep 15 1900.

There is also a Max B. Brummer born about 1860, mentioned in the US Federal Census of 1930

I'm not signed up on that site, so can't delve further. Maybe someone else on TNet is and therefore can look into it and see what his occupation was, along with a pic from his passport application.
