Went to High Island today and found what looks like a coin. Does anyone know how to clean shell crusted coin without scratching it with a knife?

Not sure if the coin is a rare one, but if not you could try electrolysis..that will do the job.

You could try soaking it in water for a couple of days, then try picking at it carefuly with a dental pic if you have one.:icon_thumleft:

When I find corroded and shell encrusted pennies I put them in muriatic acid for about 5 to 10 seconds. It will get all of that crud off for sure. It probably effects the value but it gives some instant gratification. You can get muriatic acid at Lowe's, Home Depot, or any pool chemical supply store. Make sure you wear a gas mask and do it outside. It takes around 3 seconds to start burning your hands. I just work fast with it and stay near water to wash my hands. You can put the acid in any glass container to be safe. Use a pair of grip pliers to dunk and shake the coin. Have fun!

I sometimes forget to remove coins from metal detecting clothes pockets before washing .They seem to come out clean..

Thanks for the input! I have an ultrasonic bath in my laboratory. I'll try muriatic acid and see how it does. I need to put together something for electrolysis.

You will get great results with muriatic acid. Let me know how it turns out.

When I'm curious about one of those that I find, I'll put them in a cup of white vinegar and add a little salt. Let them soak for a couple hours and the crusties will come off easily enough. I've used muriatic acid to clean my pool and concrete, very effective stuff but it will burn you and the fumes are toxic. Good luck.

Ok. I'll do the vinegar thing.
