Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

Hi all, I was out over the summer in an area that has Revolutionary War history. I set aside this piece thinking that it must be a concrete drill. I got bored and looked at it closer under the loop and discovered that it is made of what appears to be some sort of copper like material. I scraped a tiny spot on the tang. I am wondering if this could be a black powder cleaning jag. Has anyone ever found anything like this? I've seen smaller versions of this but not one quite so large. I did find some pewter items suggesting the proper age. The buckle is pewter and I believe early 1700's annular type shoe buckle. Thank you for any thoughts on this.

Re: Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

That is an early pewter knee buckle. What a find, Ed.

Kirk :hello:

Re: Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

looks more like a ball puller than a jag to me? :dontknow:

Re: Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

NICE Buckle, and definitely not a concrete drill,
(i'd have thought the same at first :laughing7: )

Re: Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

Thank you all for kind your replies. I am going to research a ball puller. I never gave that a thought... it is nice to meet you steelheadwill another NH native, thank you for your thoughts. Best of luck with your all your hunting this year. I look forward to some fun finds I hope to get out more this year.

Re: Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

That actually looks very similar to a tap, as in tap-and-die set. It would be used to extract broken screws. But, you said it was made of copper or brass? Tap-and-die sets are made from hardened steel, so maybe this IS a "ball" or bullet extractor. Interesting..... Someone here should be able to help ID this. Maybe if you have it transferred to the Whats It forum.

Re: Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

I agree, it looks like a tap to remove broken screws and rethread the holes.

Re: Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

The item in the first picture appears to be a tap for cutting threads in wood. Some old furniture had wooden knobs with wooden threads that screwed into the drawer or door. Not sure of the age though, would have been used with a hand brace likely. I have one old walnut cabinet with wooden knobs that screw into the drawers.

Re: Cleaning Jag?? & Pewter buckle

or a very large musket ball puller........ :dontknow:
