Before going further, check for grading condition. You might have a very high grade coin VF-EX.Fine, stop there until you do. Coins I clean are with hot water with a little DAWN LIQUID, in a Rx bottle, shake every now & then for two days, rinse well & tap dry with paper towel. Gets a lot of the oily slime off the coin, but does not polish.
 

If it's a truly tar-like substance, soak it in acetone for a day or two and see if it dissolves. Acetone won't hurt the coin or remove the toning.

Go with the acetone bath. Make sure it's pure acetone, not nail polish.
 

Yea, that one took a beating, well before you found it...
The cleanup pic looks good... I will never find a half dime.:sadsmiley:
 

Thanks Dave for the moral support. I hoped it would clean up better, but us people from the Cumberland Plateau dont have clean dirt.
