The coin was Green and had crusted dirt on it. I used water first, then peroxide and lemon. Now the green is blotchy. Did I do the wrong thing? Is the green the part of the coin that people refer to as the patina? I hear that people like coins that have the patina on it.

Yes the green was patina :'(

be very carefull when it comes to cleaning coins, especially bronze coins :o I personelly only use soapy water to remove surface soil,

should you find a nice Bronze coin, Like your Indian Head, firstly, stop it from drying out, you can do this in the field as I do with Roman Bronzes.

Carry some small sealable bags, take the damp dirt you dug your coin from, and encase it again in the damp soil, this will stop it from drying out.

When you get the coin home you can remove the soil with the warm soapy water, then dry and apply a light coating of Olive oil, or renaissance wax.

silver coins, well that's for another day.

Hope this helps a bit
