Clay marbles

I was just wondering, when were clay marbles made/used? What time period? I have a few from sifting old sites over the years, but know very little about them.

Clay marbles have been found at ancient Egyptian and Roman sites. In America, the Native peoples made clay marbles and clay marbles were being made in more abundance in the U.S. by the mid 1800's. They are generally not very valuable, but they are a nice addition to anyones collection.
