Tuesday morning, June 11, 1935. One of the worst fires to visit Clay City since 1899 burned down 12 business houses and residences on 6th Ave. The total loss was estimated around 25,000 to 50,000 dollars. Every house in the block, from Kirk's restaurant to Mrs. Williams place burned. There was no insurance on any of the properties.
The fire originated in the Miss Kate Daniel place. Miss Kate was having the roof on her house repaired and was warming some tar on the stove. She left the room for a moment only to return to find her room ablaze. -Ki-
