didn't knock myself out with it - but did clean it a little - was requested by a few to show cleaned
it was found in saltwater and was a little dark due to the other metals used in making 10k

I looked at it with a large magnifying glass to see the markings in side and verify that it was in fact 10k
I took it out again and looked at it with a stronger magnifier yesterday and saw something that I have
seen twice before in other rings - if you look at the ring - you'll see no wear on the gold - there are no chips
or scratches on the glass stone - I believed the ring was lost not long after the owner had it - I could be wrong
what I saw with stronger magnifier is fine scratches -(ive tried taking a close up of inside but no good)
bunch of them all around the inside -
Know what these are from? - ring was on a necklace !
So - either girlfriend took it off and threw it out there -(and it was way out there from shore)
or necklace broke and it was legitimately lost
it had been long time between targets and though I did check right around where found - I would have spiraled
out from it to check for chain had I known
- I see lots of pendants found out there with no chains
when you find a pendant - you should turn to all metal and crank sensitivity and slowly spiral around outward from where it was dug
had I known the scratches were in there - I would have gridded the area to see if there was a necklace
ive found 2 wedding bands with 100s of similar fine scratches in them in the past --same situation
could not see them with the naked eye - so did not search for a possible necklace

Ive found a school with name closest to where found and in process of trying to have alumni help find owner

Very nice preservation on the ring!

Casper, In trying to find owners I have had major success with librarians of schools. Some even get the kids involved. They have all the year books and most are very happy to help. Main office, not so much. Wish you luck.

Nice clean up, and good advice when finding such things. Best of luck in finding the owner. Returns are always a good story!

Have made many many returns in my 40+ yrs of detecting
before computers - had to go to libraries and find yearbooks
almost every school out there has a web site now a days - I try and find closest school with same name to the area found
and just contact the head of the schools alumni and let them look for them
have had some snags with a few - school thought I was trying to scam or get money from owner and they
would hang up on the phone or just say in email that they would not give out any info
or they would say just mail it to us - which I wont do normally
did it once and never heard from person again sent to principals office -- had it sent so it had to be signed for with a receipt
and tried emailing afterwards many times to see if they returned to owner with no replys
I return in person or not at all - if its in a state far away - will find a TH'er that I'm friends with close by to help out and send it to them to return for me

Nice job on the clean up Casper.
You reminded me of an experience I had with a ring I recovered in the water at one of my favorite beaches. The young lady was smart enough to have her full name engraved inside the H. S. ring. I contacted the school and tried to get contact information. The school principal, Sister Q, contacted me and asked me to forward the ring to her. She said that the school does not give out contact information. After trying to contact the young lady on Facebook, (with no success ),
I forwarded the ring to the Principal. We return rings because it is the right thing to do but it would have been nice to get a Thank You.
I never heard back from the Principal.

NIce chunk of Gold there and good luck on tracking down the owner!!

Casper, that ring is so nice! And aren't you clever to figure out that it was hung from a necklace! Great stuff. -Lisa & John

Congrats Casper! that's a really nice looking ring!! Good like finding the owner, keep us posted HH

Nice. Never had a gold class yet.

That's a nice one Casper. Congrats!

A FEW YEARS BACK - I FOUND A HUGE GOLD WEDDING BAND - LOOKED INSIDE TO SEE IF ANY DATE OR NAME
SAW DIAGONAL SCRATCHES ALL AROUND IT - REALLY BAD AND SAID"WHAT THE HECK IS THIS GUY BEEN DOING WITH HIS RING?"
THEN HAD A FRIEND WITH HIS BAND ON A NECKLACE - SAID HE COULD NOT WEAR IT ANY LONGER CAUSE IT BOTHERED HIM
I SAID CAN I SEE IT AND HE HAD SMALL SCRATCHES BEGINING AROUND THE INSIDE OF HIS - AAH HAA
SINCE IVE FOUND ANOTHER WITH SAME SCRATCHES AND NOW THIS RING - THE BANDS HAD SCRATCHES ALL THE WAY AROUND - BECAUSE THE STONE
SIDE HAS MORE GOLD AND IS HEAVIER - AND WOULD THEN HANG DOWN - IT DOES NOT HAVE AS MUCH AS THE SMALL SIDE

They will come - Ive been hunting since 1975 - and it was 5-6 yrs before I got my first
and the first 3 were real old ones and not the ones most of us think of with the stones
one was half silver half gold and looked like a signet 1920
2nd was 10k and looked like a signet and very worn - 1919
and 3rd was very cool -was a huge 1928 molded across its face - heavy 14k found on a town common
it was like 10 yrs before I got one with a stone - now ive found well over 50 - got like 13 in 2012
all water finds - most from the 20s & 30s
So I have faith you will get one yet

Nice. Never had a gold class yet.
