If you are a claim owner with 10 or fewer claims owned by yourself and related parties (spouse, children) you can submit the free small miners waiver and avoid the $155 per claim annual maintenance fee.
To do this you need to submit the free Maintenance Fee Waiver Certification before September 1st. There are other requirements including labor, recording and filing with a $10 per claim fee. Those details are for another thread. This thread is about a recent change you need to understand if you want to have a trouble free small miners submission.
The free Maintenance Fee Waiver Certification is the ONLY required official mining claims form the BLM uses. All required official government forms have to have a current OMB approval date, expiration date and form number clearly marked on the front.
This 3830-2 Maintenance Fee Waiver Certification and all other OMB approved forms have to be current to be valid. That's where the trouble can come in because this year there is a new form 3830-2 approved as of January of this year. Most of the old forms are still out there - some are still to be found on BLM sites. DO NOT USE THE EXPIRED FORM.
The last time the forms changed a lot of small miners used the expired forms and had to do a confusing resubmit with short notice. Some people lost their claims and a lot more were inconvenienced. Here's how to avoid that problem this year.
Make sure the top of the form looks like this:
If your form dates don't match that example DOWNLOAD THE CURRENT OFFICIAL FORM 3830-2 from THIS LINK and use that form. You can even fill the form out and print it on your computer if you have a decent PDF reader.
From there on the small miners exemption should go pretty easy - if you get the right form.
