To me it looks like a CW GS button that's been exposed to fire. :icon_scratch:

It has a faint c in the center I agree with the others it may have been damaged by fire

If there is a c in the shield that would make it a cavalry button. Unless it is an officers button it would date no later than 1854. Still could have seen civil war use though.
