ivan salis said:the strap & snap hook rig was commonly used by cav units in the CW to link a string of horses together so one man could lead or control them as a group when the cav men were being used as "dismounted" or ground troops === Ivan
Montana Jim said:Baldingboy... if there was CW activity there at sometime, then your relic, the snap hook, may well be CW (or much newer).
With corn fields being turned and plowed it's not uncommon to get deap signals.

Could be, then again it could have been used as a snap swivel for a sword belt too. Who knows? Know way to tell really other than taking in to account other items excavated in the same location to come up with a general concensus for the whole.Montana Jim said:It's horse tack... I've dug the same thing from stable areas... circa. 1860ish

It was red and white letters on it and it looked crimped around the edge. He says to me "Look I found some kind of Civil War Relic." I walked over and looked at it and shook my head in pity. Know what it said on top?

Actually I hope the item you found above is from the CW given the location that you were hunting. I think it is about time one of us finds something we can positively say came from the CW.
