I need some help with this item. I dug it in a Civil War skirmish area with mini balls. It's brass with a strip of iron attached to its side. It looks like it could be the throat of a sword scabbard, and you can see that when looking at the opening, it's slightly wider at the top and more narrow at the bottom, and about the same size of a sword blade. Anyhow, what the heck is it? Thanks for your help.

Thank you NOLA_Ken, I was pretty sure that's what it was. Any idea what sword it was from?

The bit of sheet-iron remaining on your brass scabbard-throat indicates it was for a sword... very few pre-20th-Century knives had an iron scabbard.

An expert on 1800s-era swords might be able to ID it, because most iron sword-scabbards had an iron throat. Yours, being brass for an iron scabbard, is unusual enough that it might result in a specific sword ID.

Thank you TheCannonballGuy. I did find a very similar brass throat that was used on a confederate Plow Works sword scabbard, what do you think?

If the CSA Nashville Plow Works scabbard's body is iron (which I can't be sure about from looking at the photo), that could indeed be the ID for the brass scabbard-throat you found. As I indicated above, I'm not an expert on sword-scabbards... which is what you'll need for confirming the specific ID for your scabbard-throat. You might try contacting some "major" civil war sword dealers, such as Larry Hicklen (Middle Tennessee Relics, website is midtenrelics dotcom), or make a phonecall to the Horse Soldier shop in Gettysburg. Ask them which civil war swords had an iron scabbard with a brass throat.
