it may military but why so you think it's CW?

If it is, on Antiques road show a few weeks back some guy had one that they valued it at very high $$$$$$$$$...

I worked as an artifact conservator on a Civil War shipwreck excavation. We removed hundreds of soldier's boxes. They did not have issued "foot lockers" like modern soldiers, they used whatever was handy, usually hardtack boxes or old trunks. The box in the picture does not exhibit any of the characteristics of a mid-19th century box. In fact, it looks about 50 years old. The lettering is a modern style of lettering, and "8th Inf" would not be correct, it would be a state name and number, like the 112th New York Volunteer Infantry, or 13th Indiana or something of that nature. Also, we did not recover a single box from the Maple Leaf that had stenciling on it, except for two ammo boxes, which had minie balls in them. I'm thinking your box is WW2, maybe even WW1, but not earlier than that.

Hmpf, lesson is never trust Authenticity/Origin Claims written on tape and stuck to the item.

Still a cool looking box!

Henry...thanks for the wisdom...I was unsure of the authenticity of it being Civil War but figured I would check...as you said it is still a cool looking box...I'm glad I purchased it :)

It is still a very nice artifact. After all, the First World War began 100 years ago next year, and the interest in that war will soon be much more intense. I advise you to hang onto it untouched, and it will be something you will appreciate more in the future. Watch WW1 collectible prices go through the roof soon.

Hello, I came across this box today and was wondering what it was used for and what it's worth. Painted on it is Co H 8 Inf. So I believe it is civil war...just a guess as to its size is about 3'x1'x1.5' again that's just a guess from looking at it. The top of the box has a hole in it and I didn't get a pic.

Thanks

Looks to be post civil war
