also smelt bacon for about a half mile no mistaken cooking..... but i was way in the woods, must've been the spirit walkers

Neat find!! I know you are close by and may know the areas. Couple years back i was hunting a trench line right near Belvedere plantation the strawberry farm in Spotsylvania right off route 2 and route 17 heading out towards like Westmoreland.. Anyway there wasn't much found since all the action happened about 6-7 miles away but I did find three shovel heads and 2 canteens both canteens seen better days they were busted up pretty good. I have yet too find another Civil War time period shovel head.

What you found is an Adz which was used for wood, the hoe in the picture is called a grape hoe it is for dirt
