A trip to the grocery store this afternoon turned my very boring and unlucky treasure hunting season around. As always, I stopped to check the store's coin counter reject tray. A measly two pennies were inside but I of course snatched them up. One was modern cent and the other seemed to be a foreign coin or token with an odd slogan on the back "Army & Navy" and the date 1863 on the front. I was hoping that it might be US but no markings to say that. But I was thrilled to find when I googled it that this was actually a US Civil War token and certainly worth more than a penny. These were minted privately to replace US coins which were hoarded and out of circulation during the war. Its in beautiful shape too, just a little bit of wear and sticky dirt on it.

That is an awesome above the ground find. A lot would be happy to find a buried one. Yours is a great find.

I never find anything in a CoinStar reject tray other than empty spaces and evil shadows.

Congrats!

Wow!!! What a find
Congrats

How do you check the reject tray in a coin star machine without having an employee open it up for you?

The reject tray is on the outside of the machine, below the coin counter part. When you use the machine it reminds you to check the reject tray so you can keep any coins that it rejects, but some people don't bother to pick them up. On coinstar machines and some other coin counting machines it is open so you can peek in. Other machines have a small plastic door you need to push in with your finger and feel around for coins. The one I found today's coin in was the kind with the open reject bin, but a few years back this same grocery store had a machine with the plastic door. I pushed my finger in on one trip and found some $23 worth of coins left behind. Had to quick grab a bag from the checkout line to put all the coins in. So never pass a coin counting machine without checking!

Thanks. Coin counting machines reject damaged coins and foreign coins, but they also reject US silver coins as well. Finding a silver Roosie is pretty common. But there has been at least one post that I am aware of here on Tnet of an individual finding a gold coin.

That is an amazing find. Congrats!!!

Wow. Just wow!
