I dug my first Civil War token today in a former farm field. I thought it was an Indian Head penny at first, and was excited to find something a little more unique. For those not familiar, Civil War tokens were privately minted and distributed in the U.S. between 1861 and 1864. The coins came about due to the scarcity of government issued cents during the war. The government banned their minting in 1864. I would like to clean this one a bit, but it is in delicate condition - oh well. Thanks for taking a look. Happy hunting!

Very nice one and fragile. I think tooth picking it and leave it alone. Nice rescue on that one.

Nice find.
Hydrogen peroxide has worked for me on dirt-encrusted copper cents.

Very nice find.

It's in similar condition to the couple I was blessed to find at what I call US Calvary Camp David .

I'd research many ways to clean it as after 150 + years in yr soil will make it unique in the way it will turn out .

Tnmountains has a good suggestion as dose PP 55.

I just scrubbed mine with water and a modestly stiff plastic scrub brush.

It turned out pretty well / about like most IH'S I have dug in Hardwood Forrest soils here in N GA .

Congratz on your 1st very nice CW Token .

Thanks. I am tempted to try that, but am a little nervous to do so, as the coin is flaking a bit on the edges. If this wasn’t the only one I ever found, I would probably go for it. Definitely worth considering though.

Yours has more detail than the ones I've found - congrats !
