got out there with my buddy ifoundit69 for some swinging today. after failing to pocket anything at our first two favorite spots, we decided to step it up and get to knockin on some doors.
it was long until the sun was in our face as we were standing out front of a beautiful old 19th century plantation. kind owners-as always in our neck of the woods...or maybe its just our charm. an hour into the hunt and 500 yards from the house we stumbled on a skirmish site!
what a day
im having some trouble ID'ing the buckle sash. seen a few that look very close, but they all have subtle differences.
thanks for looking
good luck to all
DHD

Re: civil war skirmish site found

Wow, very nice finds. the Eagle tongue piece reminds me of a 1855-1860 Militia 2 piece buckle.

Really nice buckle you found there! old digger.

Re: civil war skirmish site found

nice buckle, what made you think skirmish?

Re: civil war skirmish site found

How old is the house your hunting? More than likely it would be camp associated relics from near the house. Just my thoughts though. Nice finds, and good luck on the Id.

Re: civil war skirmish site found

If you could post up a pic of your buckle Tongue, brushed lightly(dont run water on it)That would be great.I can tell you it is not a "Buckle sash",or a sash buckle. It is VERY similar to a common buckle that Pre Dates the C.W..CC Hunter will be along and give you further details

I think they are just ramrod impressions in the soft lead from loading. Nice finds. You guys had a great hunt. HH, Quindy.

Me and ifoundit69 are thinking skirmish because of the assortment of rounds. Northern and Southern-most fired. But just my opinion.
Ill get to cleanin it! I'm approaching that task with caution.
Plus my mom lost her earring so I gotta go find it for her...
What can my lady say to an excuse like that? :whip2:

Re: civil war skirmish site found

second look, yours is somewhat different from the type I pictured(the head posture is different for one)and there were quite a few variances of that buckle so as I said,CC Hunter will know

Re: civil war skirmish site found

Nice Find!

You have found the tongue portion of a cast brass two-piece Tongue & Wreath buckle, circa mid-19th century or so. This was originally worn on a leather waist belt, and likely a commercially available "militia style" item, as opposed to regular military issue.

The particular style of eagle design, as well as the sharper profile belt loop, and stepped bridge between the belt loop and tongue disk, differs from the more commonly seen variety of cast brass eagle T&W buckles, as posted by Kuger.

Without accessing Campbell & O'Donnells reference, I am not able to assign an exact match description. Can you possibly check in the reference Kuger? If my memory serves right, this tongue may match the laurel leaf wreath with the mark of 17. I actually have that particular wreath in my collection. :)

DeadheadDigger,

Great closeup photos!

My hunch is that your buckle tongue is a match for the wreath I have. :)
