I found this shell (not the bullet),the bullet is from the civil war period. The shell is made of tin I think, and is small in size. Is this shell from the civil war? If so what kind is it. Thank You

The case is not Civil War. Boxer didn't patent the centerfire primer (in England) until 1866. Berdan didn't patent his version in America until 1868.

Don't know what it is, but it's not that old.

The Spencers and such used rimfire cases, and some like the Gallagher used oddball priming methods.

DCNR of the state forest of Pa. said it was from the 1st world war and they won't return it to us to have it check out again. The shell does not have any words or ID on the casing. The shell is about 3/4'' long of what is left.

Yes DCNR kept everything we sent them from this site. We think what we found is from the Dent's Run Lost Gold Shippment in Pa. during the civil war.Our GPL shows a large metal object 6' under the camp fire pit and the state will not allow anyone to dig(it is on state land). The state says nothing from the site was from the war period but PennState University and others say some of what we found was. I plan to list other artifacts that we found.Thank You
