Hey guys! Need your help on authenticating this saddle shield. I don't know much about these, but I dug this in savannah ga. At a skirmish site. Is there a way to tell if its civil war era? I've seen union ones which look exactly like mine. We're these common after civil war? Any info/history would be great! Thanks

...again Provenance comes into play...were they used (Mclellan saddles)during the CW period?Yes,were they used before and after?Yes.I have dug them blank and I have dug them with the seat size stamped in them as well.....far,far away from ant CW activity

I have definitely seen that shape of shield at CW shows ,often marked with US but I'm no expert.

Your plain saddle shield looks different than most plain CW union saddle shields I have seen. If you can look @ the photos you can tell there is some difference in size/measurements and the way the holes are lined up and more curvier on top.. But it still could have been used in the CW if you dug this in a camp/battlefield or something like that. My guess it is pre CW. Good luck with it.

I don't know about the rest of ya but it simply amazes me how someone can post something for ID and a member (or member's) will be able to help ID - simply amazing!

if that info is accurate is what counts....I personally cant see any difference in size between the one in question and another pictured....especially when nothing for size reference was given? Also,no info on what leads one to beleive a time period, besides "feeling".

I dont know.....if people here are no longer interested in the accuracy of information, and documentation to back it up,maybe its time for me to move on as well.Several very great minds have been chased off lately, and I for one am sick of the mockery, this place has become at times a "fairy Tale",joke

Don't move on Kuger! People (me!) do appreciate accurate IDs from reputable sources. Some people don't like to hear that their item is not "Civil War" or whatever they have dreamt up. I for one want to know for sure what I have even if it is a disappointment. I've learned a lot on here & hope to learn more. Now I can use that info to help others. There are some ignorant, uneducated people on here that really give the hobby a bad name but you are not! I'm sure Ill find something soon I can't ID & hope you're around to help bud!

I don't care if its civil war or not. Just wanted info on saddle shields and if anyone had personal field experience with them as to that was my first one found. Apparently these are common and made at different time periods so thanks kuger and hutsite for the info!

Kuger dont run off man .
where i agree that there have been some things ided recently that members have argued over if it was a good id or not . and please forgive me if this is insulting to you because i do not mean it to be. but isnt this where the guys with experience step up and set the person that is wrong correct and show them with pictures and proof .. the same as i hear on here daily telling us newer people to post proof of our ID ?
again you impress the hell out me with your knowledge as does most people here , but tell me what is expected of me and other new members ? i am first to admit if my " guess " was wrong and first to say if i am not 100% sure that i " think " it looks like a certian item.
where i am new to medal detecting and relic hunting i have lived around and been around alot of different stuff and think my opinion will help either id it or help some one else id it.
I have seen more and more complaints from members that have been with T Net for years comment about the new members messing this site up with bad id's and im getting the feeling this was supposed to be a exclusive club and if you did not join years ago then you are allowed to post a picture and get a item IDed but you should not have access to the rights to ID things .
im sorry to ramble and again i say this with the utmost respect for you and all the Vets but shut up about leaving and TEACH us if we are wrong . Hell last week i IDed a epaulets ,, i did not know the name but i knew by sight what they were thanks to this site,, i am learning from you guys daily but yes there will be messed up ID's so dont step away step up and show us..........
any way sorry for rammbling , just hate to see you guys talk about leaving...

Mical, you have done nothing wrong, and thank you.Its really nobodies problem but my own,and I need to find a way to deal with it,it may take leaving or just a little time away, but I am working on it :icon_thumleft:....if this place wasnt the best around to get things IDed,I likely would have left a long time ago.It has taught me more than I have given though
