What is it made of?

How come it could'nt have been lost in 1972?

Does the bottom of the ring look cut/broken or made that way?

Are there any markings at all inside the ring?

I think its brass.
It could have been although it looks pretty old.
The bottom does look as though it was cut or broken.
In the center on the bottom there is a faded stamp of some sort. It appears to say 18K.

This ring has a similar style initial. From ebay. Says 1930's or 40's.

I had one kinda like it in Jr. High in the early 70's.

Hard to say what age yours might be... But MJ makes a good point about it being lost later. I've been hunting an old house site. 2 early 1800's large cents and a half cent came out of the ground... then a 1946 quarter. I suspect the quarter was dropped by a hunter.

If the ring posted at the top does indeed say "18K" then it was made before the Gold and Silver Marking Act of 1906--that is, IF it was made here in the U.S.

Stylistically, I don't think it is CW--but rather late Victorian or very early 20th c.

Brass ring, cast metal, most likely; in a fire ( trash pit);this is part of the reason for separation at the solder joint. Originally gold plated most likely. Look for HGE or GE after the 18Kt. modern.

Thank you all for the help. After further cleaning I can clearly see 18K on it for sure.(No ge or hge)

I don't think it is 18K, sorry.

I have found rings made in China (at least I think they were made there) that were marked 14k and were NOT gold at all.

I have found rings made in China (at least I think they were made there) that were marked 14k and were NOT gold at all.

Before items marked 18K were required to be gold in this country, many plated rings were made which were marked with a karat marking. I have half a dozen of them in my collection, and my friends have found them as well.

I stand by my initial ID of the item.

Nice find, BigCy. I think that's a good estimate of the item's age.

Best Wishes,

The ring is not gold. for sure. It might have been plated. I looked at the back with a magnifing glass and it does say 18K on the inside. You can see in the pic of the back where it is stamped. Thanks again everyone for the help.

18kt gold won't look as bad as this no matter what you do to it.

Plated.

Modern.
