Civil War Relic

It is solid brass 3 3/8" long by 1 1/8 in diameter six sided with a square hole on the more solid end. It appears as if something was inserted in the square hole and held with a spring loaded pin. The other end appears to have had a wooden handle attached.

Interesting Item - Maybe it had somthing to do with telegraph wires ? Is there a railroad track near this location ?
