Civil war period Virginia buckle ?

I can’t find much information on this Virginia buckle. Found this at a CW hospital with several period Confederate buckles. Although I realize post war items are found at sites like this seems very logical to me that this is a period buckle especially since it was burnt which they used to do a lot at CW hospital sites. One expert believes its post but he did not seem absolutely sure another guy sent me a photo of the buckle in some book stating 1861-1865. Another book shows post war but I know books are not always accurate and I really do lean towards it being period buckle based on the info above !! Anyone have any more info ?

I guess it could be plow damage but that plate looks like it took a direct hit. Amazing relic. Gary

It looks like fire damage to me, especially with that big canker on it. What material is it?
