Found this brass piece with lead filled back like a normal Civil War era plate at old house site about 15 feet from a mini US box plate I found there earlier.

Thought it was a corner at first, but you can see the design around the edge says this was a small piece and just missing some of the left and bottom edge.

Think it is Pelican with stars above (Louisiana) and found around where we think the barn was. Is it some horse piece? I have been searching a bit and can't find an example. It was found in middle TN.

There is no telling. Maybe part of a carriage or horse tack. Good luck.

My first thought was that it's possibly horse furniture (a rosette), but the shape doesn't look right. It could also be part of a leather strap end. :dontknow:
I'd tumble it and see if there are any signs of metal attachments coming through the lead back, then you'll know for sure if it was a rosette or bridle decoration..

Horse rosettes and bridle tack decoration came in various shapes and sizes, so it may be one of those. :icon_scratch:

The collection shown below includes antique horse tack brasses and nine leather straps mounted with brass medallions (motifs include hearts, crown, castle and geometrics), two are marked “H. C. Boyers, Saddler, Marketrasen,” along with three loose brasses. The brasses were offered with a copper and brass mounted hoof inkwell, inscribed “Tommy, Died December 1st, 1875.” This collection is British and likely dates to the late 19th to early 20th century.

I found one maybe a tad smaller than that, a momma pelican feeding her babies, at a CSA camp here in Arkansas, close to a battle. Never figured out what it came off of. I thought maybe a knife handle but have no clue. I hope y'all get it figured out. I found this 20 years ago and gave it to a friend that wound up selling all his finds and some stuff that had been given to him...d2

Interesting piece. I looked for a while but didn't see anything close on the internet.

It's pretty small. I doubt it is horse furniture and the orientation of the pelican is not right for a strap end (IMO).

Simply based on the size I'm guessing cartridge box plate. Possibly pre-war militia.

Ronbo67,

Your recovered lead-filled stamped brass item is from the top handle of a ca. 1850's-1860's Bowie Knife manufactured in Sheffield England for the American market.
