Don't believe it is part of a horseshoe because it is all lead. That is ironic, when I saw it in the ground as I was diging, I thought it was a horseshoe. Thanks.

Looks to me like the old lead seals for a can or perhaps the old caste iron pipe seal. thats my guess anyways

Is there a groove in it or is it bent up?? Its got me curious. Being from Ringgold your in a good area to dig the Civil War stuff. I'm from Tunnel Hill, maybe we can hook up and go dig sometime.

I think Cedarrat is on the right track. Imagine the joint between the straight end of a four-inch drainpipe, and the bell end of the next piece of pipe. Does it look like it could be the lead seal for the joint?

I get scrap lead from torn down houses for casting rifle balls from a junk yard. That looks like the lead seal for a cast iron stand pipe. They used to pound oakum in the joint and then pour "plumbers' lead" in on top of the oakum to seal the pipe.
