Two items.
I am new to detecting, so I am going through my stash I have found recently to see what things are. Area near a Civil War era fort, also homestead during the 20's, 30's, 40's, etc. What are these? In the first two pics I think I see an eagle. The head is roughly just above center, feathered wings to each side diagonally? Civil War breastplate?? A fence finial? It is about the size of a fifty cent piece. Heavy, soft like lead. VDI rings between 65 to 70's but mostly mid to upper 60's. The third and fourth pics is the front and back of another one that rings a VDI approximately the same, lead heavy as well, size a little larger than a quarter. Should I pass these up? I have been, thinking it's just another fence piece. They zing the detector in this range fairly frequently. (I did decide to dig another one out yesterday, pock marks, cupped shaped, a little larger than a nickel).

Re: Civil War items?? Eagle? Lead? Silver?

It looks like some Civil War soldier made poker chips or checkers by flattening out some round balls. I'm speaking about the item on the left in the last pic. WELCOME to the forum. ;D Breezie

Re: Civil War items?? Eagle? Lead? Silver?

The first object appears to be a civil war era yankee "3-groove" Minie-ball (probably a .58-caliber one) which has been hammered very flat. The object's lower right shows the remnants of the three parallel grooves, which extend across to the object's left.

Try to imagine hammering the minie in the photo flat, (photo below), and your first object is about what you'd get.

The presence of the hammered-flat Minie in the area you found the other lead objects indicates Breezie is correct, the other objects are hammered-flat musketballs or pistol-balls (depending on their size). One or two of them might be Minie-balls. Need a "side-view" photo which will show us if there are any groove-remnants on their edges.

Hammering a bullet changes its shape but not its weight. So, if you can weigh those lead objects on a jeweler's scale, tell us the weight in grams or grains, and we'll be able to tell you if they match up with the known weight of various calibers of musketballs amd Minie-balls.

Edit: After I posted my reply, I saw that I'd mis-typed the caliber of the Minie-ball. I meant to type .58 -- not .48 caliber. I've now fixed that typing error.

Re: Civil War items?? Eagle? Lead? Silver?

Thanks for the welcome Breezie! I had seen you answer another "Whats It" post today on a similar item so I quickly took some pics and posted these hoping you might share your expertise in identifying these items. Poker chips made from ballistics - I never would have known. Thanks again too, on the forensic ballistic analysis of this item Mr. Cannonball guy! Y'all are tops.

This hobby is addictive.

I will mark this one SOLVED.

Thanks again all.
