civil war in va and nc

i was wondering if there was if there were any place to go hunt in NC or VA for civil war artifacts for 2 newbies without getting into any trouble. I'm new to this and would like to hunt without worrying about getting arrested for finding something knowone knew was there to start with. thanks for all your help happy hunting

You should find out what battles took place in your area of interest, then find out if they are state for federal owned. If they are privately owned, contact the owner and see if they will let you dig.
