I was wondering if anyone out there could ID this for me. I found this item in a civil war encampment that was occupied by both the Union army and the CSA army during the civil war. I found this item in central Virginia. We have dug many Civil War items including bullets, buttons, and calvary items from this corn field.

Some folks I have talked to have said that they think this may be a soldiers ID tag and some say that it may be a counter stamped token. It is the same size as a large cent and it appears to have some remnants of the wreath on the disc.

It is odd because it has the name H. Nelson in the center of the disc on one side and then the same name on the opposite side with one being upside down on the other.

If anyone could give me their opinion it would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

That was quick Iron, thanks for solving my mystery!

Re: Civil War ID Tag or Counter Stamped Token????

Is a known countermark, but unfortunately unattributed, at least with the reference, but I'm guessing will be the case for all others too. At least now you know it's not an ID tag and don't have to waste more time pursuing such an ID.
