Could be from mid-1800's to today...

CW was a very short period and a lot happened before and after.

That definitely looks like a Confederate gutterback-style frame buckle. Very nice find.

I've found the exact fasteners or buckles or similar here in California, could be CW era but I don't think so.

Thanks, I did save this rusty chain that has a swivel, the penny is for scale reference and the 2 lengths of chain on the left are modern for comparison.

Were these buckles used outside of that Mud Hut suggested, as that looks correct to me. Ant, I don't see it in your pile.

You may be correct but I really don't see a way to positively ID it unless the history of the area and the dimensions were know. At least that would help with eliminating some guesses.

I thought it looked similar to the 2 thin gauge buckles in the top of these pictures:

These were found in the location of the battle of fort sanders in Knoxville Tn..I'm pretty sure its a civil war gutter back Georgia frame buckle like the fellas said above..I'm taking it to a local relic dealer tomorrow to have if looked at.

It looks like several at the link that Fullstock posted, so it could be. What is the height and width, and how long are the prongs?

The basic design is the same, but I didn't see any with the gutter back.
