Greetings,

I live in WA state and I am an avid Civil War buff. We don't have the history like the east coast. I am considering a trip back east to sight see and do some hunting:) Anyone up to taking a history nut on a hunt? How's the luck of finding a worthwhile sight that's not a federal historic location? Not to mention, are most of the areas picked over already? Thanks for your time

There is always more to be found even in the picked over areas.

Believe it or not there are still untouched areas but they are either hard to find or almost impossible to get permission to hunt. I know of one group that actually leased the right to detect on one farmers land. I think they paid $10,000 dollars for a year of digging. There were four or five of them so they each paid $2,000-$2,500. I saw the collection of one of them and it was money well spent. If his collection was sold on the open market he would make his investment back many time over. The farmer didn't want people on his property so no one was ever allowed to detect there but once a large amount of money was on the table he agreed. It was a large campsite that was not too far from a railroad line so it was occupied for a long time. Once they excavated one tent/cabin site they knew they were built in lines a set distance apart and were able to go right down the line. You name it and they found it.

Unfortunately I was not part of that group and I don't have any lines on sites for you to hunt but good luck.

This post may be a little off topic , but there are plenty of sites along the east coast to detect civil war relics, although not as far North as NJ. I have been pouring over Civil War maps and have located potential sites within a two hour drive from here. I am planning to visit a relative who lives within a mile of some camps and forts that never saw much action. Drop me a Private message and I would be happy to share some of the info with you.

I'm in Savannah for the winter and there are plenty of Civil War sites all around here. Sherman ended his "March to the Sea" here and the British Burned Savannah to the ground twice. So lots of stuff. I have done all the research, found the places, and have been given permission to hunt only one place 50' x 250'. That's it. Everywhere else nobody will give permission. They are worried about liability, finding lots of stuff and ripping them off, etc. You name it and I've heard it. It's crap for finding a place to go. Don't know if it is any better where you are going but I doubt it. I'm pretty well shut out and down.
