The item was recovered in a small patch of woods where I recovered a confederate horses bit. I'm hoping it is CW but its made of copper. The research I've done suggests it may be a piece to a horse gag chain, but the loop on the ones I've found is flat like the piece that connects to the hook. If someone has some insight as to what it is or time period I would be very happy. Clean and dirty pics with clad us dime. Thanks everyone.

That was my first guess a sword or bayonet hanger. Also the ring isn't flat like other gag loops and it being made of copper over brass. Was copper used for such items in the CW or is it newer

It is definitely an early-1900s civilian horseharness gag chain. Still being made today, too. Sometimes the center section of the gag chain is plain, and sometimes it is fancy. See the diagram from the 1907 Pierson-&-Hough horsegear catalog. Note that it has the long "hook." I'll also include a photo of a newly-made one available at horseharness supplier leatherworks.com. Like yours, it has only one "segment" between the end-pieces.

They are believed to all be from after the end of the civil war because nobody has reported seeing one in a civil war era photograph.
