I went metal detecting today and found some civil war goodies. While detecting I decided to check out an old barn on my mother/ father in laws property and saw an old horse bridal/ eye blinder set hanging on the wall. I was admiring it when I noticed It had two beautiful brass U.S rosettes on each side. I immediately began freaking out because I’ve seen similar rosettes in civil war relic books. The leather is very brittle and fragile.. I have found quite a few civil war artifacts before, but nothing of this caliber. I would love to hear any information you might have because I am by no means an expert! If you think this is from the civil war please let me know! (I brought it inside and out of the elements.)

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing more like WWI than CW.

Agree with Cru. That buckle has a roller on it. I don't think Civil War buckles had that. Still an amazing find. You need to mount it on a display so it don't fall apart. Gary

I just found some similar Indian war & ww1 ones online after a bit of digging! Thank you so much for your help! I still love it just the same.

PS. After a good clean, I would feed that leather some oil to preserve it.

Boy that is one nice find , nice Minnie also .

ToddsPoint , I'm not complaining , but are you 'positive' "roller buckles " you did say "I don't think Civil War buckles had that " .

I need to do more work myself on this & also when the notch for the tong was introduced . Or even when or if the tong was made where it would not slide back and fourth on its attachment. ?

Nice find, congrats! I believe its a bit later than the CW. :icon_thumleft:

Never say never, but I've never seen a buckle with a roller that came from a known Civil War site. Surely one would have been posted here before. Maybe we need the CannonballGuy to confirm. Gary

Here's a 1864 dated Civil War knapsack with 5 roller buckles. Very common finds in Civil War camps.100_3604.jpg

Harrison, are you the gentleman from Franklin, Tennessee? That bridle with rosettes, is one Fantastic find whether from the War of Northern Aggression, or WWI. Great save and find either way. Congrat's.

I am Definitely going to try my hardest to preserve it!
You can use mink oil as a good preservative or like this spray can which I think I bought at a gun shop if memory serves. Nice find and good luck.

Cool.

I do believe I have dug iron roller types with Minnie's & other CW relics in the area .
Thanks

Neets foot oil is a great leather preservative. May need to be warmed before using, because it thickens in cold weather.
