We believe these to be parts to an Enfield rifle, but we aren’t positive. Hopefully we’ll be able to do some electrolysis on them!! Just thought I would share! Any ideas on the type of gun?? Thanks!!

Your guess is correct... the lockplates appear to be from the British Model P-1853 Enfield Rifle. If the hammers were found with the lockplates, they most likely are also Enfield gunparts. But in the photo, the two hammers seem to not be identical. They are too heavily rust/dirt-encrusted for me to identify.

Thank you for the info!! But yes they were found very close to each other on the battle field where the battle of franklin occurred! I’ll try my best to clean them up and maybe get some of the buildup off. I’ll post another picture tomorrow! Thanks again!!:D

Tomorrow?
Each part would take me a week using a cellphone charger for electrolysis. Guess I should step up the juice.

Great save.

Courtzzy, Great find and saves of the gun (musket parts) from the Battle of Franklin, Tn. This was one major battle where 6 Confederate Generals would be killed in battle, among them, General Patrick Cleburne, the "Stonewall" of the west. Take your time cleaning these parts, and hit this area again when you get the chance. Usually when gun parts are found grouped together such as these were, it leads one to think that maybe captured weapons were being either destroyed or repaired in the area in which they were found.

That’s all very true and so cool!! We live right by Cleburne street right where he died! It’s all so historic in this area. We’re very lucky to have permission to look there!! :D we’re definitely going to take our time cleaning them up and be very careful. My boyfriend also found a civil war artillery eagle button around the same area! He was stocked to find that!! But that’s a very good point. We need to check that area hard! Thanks again!!

Hahaha oh sorry I just meant like wash it off a little. Lol. Not the electrolysis yet. We need to learn exactly how to do that. We’ve actually only gotten into the hobby of detecting about 2 months ago!! :D we just live in such a historically rich town!

You are blessed to live in an area so rich with our History. If I may suggest, there are some great Utube videos on relic preservation and using electroalysis. That is truly hallowed ground where you live living on Cleburne Street. Gen. Cleburne was one truly Bad Boy and had the admiration of his troops.

I’ll for sure post a picture when we get them all cleaned up! We were just now going through our iron scrap bucket where we put all the iron while digging the trash pit and found another hammer to another gun! So crazy. We really need to search it again! :D

Absolutely recheck that area and go low and slow. Continued Success to you.

The hammer on the left does look to be an Enfield, the one on the right will be hard to id until it's cleaned. Rather than electrolysis I'd suggest brushing the loose rust off soaking it in evaporust overnight.
