Thats exactly what it is,or a slide parasol piece....Looks like a candlestick holder that has become detached from its base plate.
I'm with Kuger; it looks like an umbrella or parasol piece especially with the splayed end on the right. WELCOME to the forum Breezie
I thought about its being a parasol slide, too, but couldn't mentally picture the tabs at the end as they would relate to the mechanism. So, my mind being what it is, I started visualizing some of the more cheaply made tall candlesticks I have seen, where tabs affix the holder to the base in lieu of a screw, and mixed those thoughts with what appears to be a slot in the tube as shown in Mark's bottom left photo, and came up with the following reconstruction. Of course that really doesn't mean a whole lot, and it still could be a parasol slide, but I had fun playing anyway.
Hey Creskol Your mind and mine generally run together on ID-ing stuff, and your theory is a good one . . . .but I don't think I've ever seen a wooden stick inside of a brass candle holder. Of course, I'm sure there is at least one somewhere in the world. I'm headed out to church now, so I don't have time to post a pic, but don't you remember those round splayed out rings that fit in the top of parasols? (I have several & will take pics later.) Perhaps this is a later version where the round, splayed ring was built into the base. Just a though, Breezie
Remember? are you kidding? I have a hard time with that function anymore. I am sure your mind is way sharper than mine these days, Breezie, so I will yield to your expertise... A parasol handle it is.
Breezie you know what you just solved it because I found 3 of those other lil pices that look like cogs
