Pretty sure its called a bit boss, they were on the sizes of a leather rein on each side of the horse's mouth.Looks great too, well preserved.

my Garrett has been bashed something awful about it's depth viability but i'm constantly hitting 8" to 10"...maybe these folks just don't like the Garrett...I found this item in a well hunted area and i'm thinking the depth was the problem...love my GARRETT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

taz42o have a ? for you...if you'll notice on the image you sent me the bit boss pictured has what looks like a period at the bottom between the US. Mine does not have anything between the US.Have any thoughts on this...

In the link Taz provided the U.S is upside down. ??? The period between the U and S might help you date the bit boss, but also zillions of them were made, probably by different companies. A cavalry division consisted of something like 15,000 mounted troopers. Period between or not doesn't change the use of the item.

I researched this and found out the "bit boss" was ordered changed to brass because the bridles were made mostly of leather and were being changed to metal so was needed a metal piece to hinge the bit to the bridle.this chg was made in 1859.the bit boss was made with a plain background and a period between the U & S. At the height of calvary usage in 1863,Sect of War William Stanton ordered the boss changed from a plain background to what was refered to as a snippled or wavy background and the period was dropped.Stanton was somewhat of stickler for fancy details. So mine is from the period of 1863 as it has the wavy background and no period between theU and S.
