Civil War Era Horse Bridal Rosette?

I need help IDing this thing. I am leaning towards a rosette for a horse. It is lead backed like a box plate or buckle.

If it is lead backed I would think it is safe to assume it is a rosette. Although I've not seen one shaped like that - Civil War or otherwise...

Agreeing with DCMatt... more specifically, a civilian-usage (not military) horse bridle rosette, missing the attachment wire/rod from its back, dating from the first half of the 1800s, plus or minus a little bit.
