The "how" is for believe it or not so, I won't try, much.

I couldn't get out, (again), today so I puttered around the house, figured to research some old books. While trying to pick out which old book to peruse, I knocked over my ATP. It landed leaning on the bookshelf. The impact was minimal, it pushed one book back further than the others. So, I thanked the ATP for choosing for me, set it upright and sat down to read. I opened the book and this fell out.

Like I said, believe it, or not. :dontknow: LOL

I'll just let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

I am simply flabbergasted and for the first time in a long time, speechless. :)

Sorry for the poor pics, don't have much to take them with anymore.

Feel free to comment.

Thanks for peeking.

Whadifind , That's a neat piece of history there - it seems to be in decent condition for it's age . If I was in your position I would seek out
someone in your area who has expertise in the conservation /preservation of paper ephemera . They will likely be able to assist you in getting
these documents framed with acid free paper and U. V. protected glass . Great Find ! Is this an ancestor of yours ?

Wow! I love it when God smiles on you like that.

Funny you mention the condition. I was shocked at just how good condition it's in now. For being in a book for God knows how long? :dontknow:
I'm tempted to put it back the way I found it and let it stay preserved as it is now! LOL

No, I've no clue who he is, a pretty fascinating find for me! I'm still shocked.

WOW! Outstanding condition on that document. Like Argentium posted, you might want to look into preserving that awesome piece of history. Congrats on the killer find, and you didn't even have to leave the house!

Does that say hepatitis and chronic diarrhea

Awesome. I have an Ancestry subscription and would be happy to look this person up for you.. I have quite a few Civil war ancestors, and chronic diarrhea was a common illness as well as cause of death for many soldiers.

What a wonderful fell in to your life! I really would take it to an expert. To easy for mold, fungus, & insects to destroy such beautiful documents. Make sure expert has good reputation.

Sweet find man! Does that say "Chronic Diarrhea?....

I love how you find stuff with your MD not only when you're not outside, but when it's not even turned on.

Does that functionality come with a special upgrade? :laughing7:

Very nice document, superb condition. I myself would invest in a good frame, UV filtering glass and acid-free backboard to display it. Piece of history like that deserves a little pampering at least, especially if you can locate any living family members.

Actually, it says, "...entitled to discharge by reason of Hepatitis and Chronic Diarrhea".

One of the major pitfalls of the times.

Yep, it will be treated kindly from here on. But, and I'm hoping people won't look on me as being selfish, but, the family has done without this document for better than 150 years. I have it now and my plan is to keep it for my own pleasure. I'll share it, display it, but it is in my collection now. Maybe I'll will it to a museum one day, but for now? Sorry.

Thanks!

No need to be sorry, if you (or the ATP) hadn't found it, the document would still be lost.
How you pulled that off, finding it with your detector not even turned on and it's not even metal! You beat all of us on that one!
Congrats it was meant to be! You saved it! God only knows what would have happened to it if you hadn't found it!
Do they have an "unusual find by highly unusual method" vote on here?

Thanks! And, as far as any "vote" on a website? Doesn't matter. This is going to be VERY hard to beat as my find of a lifetime!

I guess, it was just mean to be.

Yes a very special find that tells you their story, their life. Very personal, unlike a coin where you're left wondering who held it last. Gives a lot more satisfaction.

Just because of all of the questions about "chronic diarrhea". That's the terminology they used back then for dysentery and according to union records more soldiers died from it than did from wounds.

So very true. We really have no idea what those men went through back then. We are so pampered. All that and STILL fight that war! Pretty humbling.

Is anyone familiar with the autograph of the commander? Nardiman? Wardiman?
