Civil War Canteen?

Bought this at flea market this past weekend and a buddy of mine said he believes it is an early militia or confederate canteen. It's small in size, about 4''. It is drum shaped and shows the solder marks around the seams. It has a heavy patina but other than that appears in great shape. There are a few dents on the front.

The screw top says HFJ Co. inside a cross. I did some research on this company and they made screw tops (just the top) in the 1850's.

Has anyone seen one like this before? I can't find one identical anywhere. Any help is appreciated!

Do to the small size I'm thinking it held liquor . Nice looking item !

I had a large canteen that shape, it was modern though, 1970s, about 9-10 inches diameter, had striped felt cloth on the sides and around the circumference with a web shoulder strap. Never saw one that size or with that type of screw cap though.
