Not even sure if it's civil war related but it did come from a good site. I have found plenty of union and confederate relics at this spot. There is a "U", "C", or a "horseshoe" on the face. The back appears to have some lead attached still. I have never seen a plate that resembles this but since it did come from a good spot and it does resemble some plate characteristics I figured i would see if anyone could help. Not sure...

I saw a Civil War drum once that had a shield on it with the company designation. The "C" could be for Company C. That is just a guess.

I am thinking it is the lead filling of a rossette as well.Rossettes are stamped brass, sterling silver etc, with a lead filling.

I have dug several rosettes and I think this would be a little large. And it does seem to be a bit crudely made.

i have my doubts it is a rosette though it could be, i think GrizBear is more right in the right direction with the drum or something in that nature, sometimes the soldiers would mark initials in a piece like this and attach it to something like a drum or something personal of theirs. Good luck with the ID! :occasion14:

Not from a drum. I'm a CW reenactor and field musician. I've seen plenty of rope tension drums and this item is too big to be used on a rope tug. I have seen small shields on the tugs but they are about the size of a modern US penny.

I think it is/was a rosette.

I can definitely see rosette, but has anyone seen one similar? I would like to know what was on the face. And the meaning behind it.

Thanks. This does make sense. And the shields are normally cast brass with an attachment on the back if I'm not mistaken.

I think DC Matt might be right about it being a little big for a drum adornment. But it being used on something else other than a rosette is definitely something I am still searching. Being that it is lead filled, normally means it was attached to leather is some way. My first thought was maybe a cartridge box plate but it seems a little small. But I can see rosette too. The scalloped edge is something I have seen on rosettes.

I'm a little curious about that perfectly straight cut. I've seen dug belt plates cut up to make something else. They were most likely cut with a VERY sharp knife. This item thin and doesn't show signs of being smashed or bent in the process of cutting. It almost looks like it was cut with tin snips or shears. Maybe cut with the lead backing still in it?

Anyway... I'm thinking it was a rosette and someone needed a piece of the copper for a repair of some other item.

But, as usual, I'm just guessing.

That's a good point. It's a real clean cut. There is no stress marks from it being bent in half. And if it were cut with just a knife it would have bent it some. This still has a slight concave shape to it.
