Pretty sure it's pre-war*being a one piece*, but soldiers would use pre-war items, especially Confederates. Great find!
 

That might be 1820s
 

Is there an I in the shield? And, can you see any type of back mark? Either lettering or rows of stars? It may be from the mid 1830s so a backmark would help confirm the age.

Probably was used in the civil war. I have also found that button in confederate areas. I think they brought them with them... Nice dig!
 

No backmark. Nothing in shield either. The eagle head faces to the right as you look at button. Not many face to right.
 

Also it is concave
 

Nice one piece Infantry Officer's cuff button! Might be a scarce one with the right facing eagle.
