I was digging in an old dump near my house yesterday when this popped out. When I saw it, I immediately thought civil war. I am very, very happy! I never thought I was going to find a civil war anything up here, let alone on my own property! My guess is that taken home by a veteran after the war. It is a Massachusetts Volunteer Militia coat button. This makes sense because many Vermonters originally came from Massachusetts. The gold gilt on the front is in surprisingly good condition but there is none on the back. The back mark reads ?Scovill MF?G CO Waterbury?. Thanks for looking!
