I was digging in an old dump near my house yesterday when this popped out. When I saw it, I immediately thought civil war. I am very, very happy! I never thought I was going to find a civil war anything up here, let alone on my own property! My guess is that taken home by a veteran after the war. It is a Massachusetts Volunteer Militia coat button. This makes sense because many Vermonters originally came from Massachusetts. The gold gilt on the front is in surprisingly good condition but there is none on the back. The back mark reads ?Scovill MF?G CO Waterbury?. Thanks for looking! image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

That doesn't look like it has ever been buried! How did you clean it?

I used a little bit of lemon juice on the gilt and my Andreas Pencil on the back. Came out very well! The gilt was already in great shape!

That's in really nice shape, congrats on the great find!!

Beautiful button! Congratulations

That is an awesome find!! Congrats!!

I just got back from the dump and I found ANOTHER ONE!! This one is in worse condition with no gilt and a bent shank but the details are still good. I am hoping that this means they threw the whole coat in and there are more. I found it using a very simple sifting set up I have down there which is just a wood pallet and a square of wood with some mesh in it. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Nice saves, and the condition is way better than average anymore. Of course they brought some uniforms home after the war, which eventually became dust.

Simply astonishing how beautiful that button is- Congrats!!
