that type of design is pre 1902 --in 1902/03 the us military switched to the great seal design * -- most likely that button is post civil war but pre 1902 -- maybe Spanish American war era (1899 /1902) or Indain war era ( 1870 /1880)--- so the front design is that of say 1870 to 1902) most likely --but the rear button markings are "modern" so a reenactors button most likely

Waterbury didn't use that name or backmark until 1941.

looks to be a 00751 pattern type * see Waterbury button company website --look under -- eagle button --might be modern back with old style front design--say like a reenactors button ...for their uniforms -- this explains the "old style" looking front with the modern rear lettering..

Mud is correct.

From Waterbury's own site at: About Us - Waterbury Button

1941- 1945 -Wartime demands lead to rapid expansion. The Waterbury Button Company makes a range of products for the Allied forces, from buttons to bomb fuses. The company changes its name to Waterbury Companies, Inc., to reflect its diversified product lines.

Thanks everyone for your input.....I felt like that might be the case. Found on a farm just off of the Shiloh battlefield park. Good stuff has been found here...but there have been some reenactors on the farm before. Thanks so much for the help!

Old style front, newer backmarks. By any chance was it found near a battlefield? It looks to me like it is from a reenactment. I highly doubt it is for military use, it is a Civil War design and in the 1940's the military would not use a design that outdated, it is probably of a reenactment costume.

Just my though, Coinman123,
